What Is Dancehall?
Dancehall according to the oxford dictionary, can be defined as an up-tempo style of dance music originating in Jamaica and derived from the slower Reggae genre, in which a Deejay improvises lyrics over a recorded instrumental backing track or to the accompaniment of live musicians. While affected by and encapsulating elements of earlier forms of Jamaican music (for example, mento, ska, dub roots, rock and reggae), the music culture labeled “dancehall” occupies a late-twentieth-century cultural, political and economic issues that are particular only to the late twentieth century, dancehall music is critically exiled from all preceding genres of Jamaican music culture.
