Parent's Role
In order to effectively minimize the effects that the musical content of the dancehall genre has on children and adolescents, I believe that both the parents and Broadcasting agencies have to do their part in order to make an effective change in both the children’s lives and the music industry as a whole. The influence a parent has their child is monumental, for they are the cornerstones and leaders of their learning process throughout the years and has continuously shaped and influenced their behavior and decision making processes. On the other hand the Broadcasting agencies play a huge part in dictating what will be seen and heard in the media. There are a variety of ways adolescents are able to access and obtain music in today’s modern society, thus the parents job in monitoring and regulating what their child listens to may be a bit of a difficult task. I believe however that no matter how difficult the task parents have to be involved in the decisions their children make regarding the music they are consuming in order to combat the effects that graphically violent lyrics may have on their children. The act of simply getting to know your child and becoming more involved in their day-to-day activities will help the parent to easily detect changes in their child’s mood and behavior, which may be related to their personal music choice.
